In Search of Mary Shelley
Fiona Sampson
in conversation with Sally Laverack
Mary Shelley was brought up in a house full of radical thinkers – poets, philosophers and writers. At 16 she eloped with Percy Byssche Shelley embarking upon a relationship lived across Europe, coping with infidelity, debt and the death of three children before early widowhood. While still a teenager, Mary composed her extraordinary novel Frankenstein. What were her influences? The prize winning writer and poet, Fiona Sampson reveals the real Mary Shelley and her passionate commitment to writing when to be a woman writer was a costly anomaly.
