The George Millar Literary Dinner
Jonathan Powell
Theme: The Political Landscape both Home and Away
Jonathan Powell is a British diplomat who served as the first Downing Street Chief of Staff under Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 – 2007. He was the only senior adviser to last the whole period of Blair’s leadership. During this time, he was able to use his diplomatic skills as chief British negotiator on Northern Ireland.
In 2011 he co-founded with Mark Griffiths the charity Inter Mediate to work on armed conflicts around the world. Since 2013 he has also been a member of the Board of Save the Children International. In May 2014 Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Powell as UK Special Envoy to Libya to promote dialogue between the rival factions. He has also given evidence at several enquiries including the Hutton Inquiry which was controversial. His books include: The New Machiavelli: How to Wield Power in the Modern World and Talking to Terrorists: How to End Armed Conflicts.
Powell has a strong insight into both national and international politics and is constantly being asked his views and opinions on both.
